Mission and Nomination Information

About Ruth and James Ewing
The awards are named in honor of the late Ruth and James Ewing, who made many contributions to the local arts community through their stewardship of the Keene Sentinel and through personal philanthropy. Both Ewings were directors at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough. James founded the New Hampshire Humanities Council and established the James D. Ewing World Affairs Lecture at Keene State. Ruth was active with the Center for Chamber Music at Apple Hill and the Grand Monadnock Arts Council.

Our Mission
The Ruth and James Ewing Arts Awards: Hometown recognition of world-class artists in the Monadnock region.

Ruth and James Ewing Arts Awardees are creating and presenting art of excellence and contributing to the field of arts and culture in our community and beyond. Our goals:

  • To bring awareness and appreciation to the rich and vibrant arts scene in the Monadnock region;
  • To further develop the sense of cultural identity for the Monadnock region community;
  • To elevate winning artists and arts organizations with a community-building celebration in their home region;
  • To celebrate Arts Alive!’s mission: The intersection of arts and community well-being;
  • And to promote the Monadnock region as a place that creative industries are appreciated, celebrated, and welcomed

Awards will be made at a celebration on July 24 at Redfern Arts Center on the campus of Keene State College. Tickets for this event go on sale May 22 at www.sentinelsource.com/ewingarts

You will find on this website categories in which to place a nomination. Please review all rules and select the appropriate category. A nomination may be entered in more than one category, if appropriate.

Awards categories
Judges will make awards for Excellence in:

  • 2D Visual Arts, including but not limited to:
    • Painting
    • Printmaking

  • 3D Visual Arts, including but not limited to:
    • Fiber Arts
    • Fashion/Costume Design
    • Ceramics
    • Sculpture
  • Literary Arts, including but not limited to:
    • Non-fiction
    • Screenwriting/Playwrighting
    • Poetry
    • Fiction
  • Interdisciplinary Arts, including but not limited to:
    • Film
    • Architecture design
    • Theatre design & direction
    • Performance art
  • Folk and Traditional artists - arts passed down or indigenous, cultural arts, folk art
  • Presenters of the Arts, including but not limited to:
    • Gallery curation
    • Performing arts season curation
    • Festival or event curation
  • Student Award - to celebrate a student creating exemplary works of art; college or high school

The above awards will be announced on June 1. Judges will also make awards in the following two categories with winners kept secret until the event on July 25.

  • Lifetime Achievement Award - to celebrate an individual or organization who or which has demonstrated sustained longevity in creating or presenting excellent art.
  • Excellence in Community Engagement, including but not limited to:
    • Offering opportunities to participate in the arts;
    • Community conversation through the arts;
    • Commmunity visioning and planning through the arts;
    • Making arts accessible to underserved populations;
    • Bringing art into new venues to reach new audiences;
    • And arts education

Rules:
The contest is open to artists who reside within the area commonly accepted as the Monadnock Region. Individual artists, as well as groups are eligible, i.e. a chorale group or a string quartet.

Self-nominations are encouraged.

Nominations may be submitted via this website between April 20, 2019, and midnight, May 17, 2019.

All nominations should include Artist Statement and brief Biography or Organizational Mission and Vision Statement (300 words) about what defines the artist and the goals of the artist or organization.

Supporting information: Resume, education, exhibitions, honors, awards, reviews, press or achievements, either in list form or in PDF.

Up to five examples of the artist’s work in one of the following forms: PDF, jpeg, video or link to website/digital portfolio. If link to online portfolio, please specify up to five pieces of work for consideration.

For Literary Artists, please limit submissions to a work or a piece of a work of no more than 2,000 words.

Presenter of the Arts nominees should be institutions, venues, organizations, businesses and individuals that or who demonstrate excellence in selection and presentation of art in the Monadnock Region.

In the case of Lifetime Achievement, Excellence in Community Engagement or Presenter of the Arts awards, please include a narrative of 500 words detailing why the artist or organization is deserving of recognition in this particular category, along with any supporting documents deemed helpful for the judges.

Lifetime Achievement nominees should have a well-documented and lengthy career of enhancing the arts in the Monadnock Region.

Excellence in Community Engagement should possess a well-documented case for spreading the value of the arts and boosting community involvement in the arts in the Monadnock Region.

To recommend an artist or organization, please include all of the following:

  • Name of artist/organization recommended for nomination
  • Email contact for artist/organization
  • Phone number for artist/organization
  • Name of individual making the recommendation
  • Email of individual making the recommendation
  • Phone number for individual making the recommendation
  • Which award category you feel is most appropriate for this nominee
  • A statement on why this artist/organization should receive an award (Up to 300 words)

Nomination materials may not be returned. Winners agree to allow Arts Alive! and The Keene Sentinel to use at no cost to Arts Alive! And The Keene Sentinel winning images or video in promotional materials solely for The Ewing Arts Awards, and on the cover of the Ewing Arts Awards magazine.

Artist Statement:

Artist statement of 300 words that introduces the artist and his or her work. Statement should include who the person is as an artist and how that is presented through his or her work. Separately, please list any honors or awards, reviews or stories about the artist; links to applicable portfolios, websites or video; and any information demonstrating the artists' efforts on behalf of or in collaboration with the arts community.*
